Description
This onion jam recipe is sweet, rich, and deeply savory. It is perfect for cheese boards, burgers, and sandwiches.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 pounds yellow onions, sliced into thin half-moons (about 1/8 inch thick)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Peel and cut the onions in half, then slice into thin half-moon strips about 1/8 inch thick.
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and salt. Stir to coat, then cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Sprinkle in the brown sugar and pour in both vinegars. Stir to combine.
- Add the black pepper, thyme leaves, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir gently and keep the heat at medium-low.
- Continue to cook the mixture uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally, allowing it to thicken into a glossy, syrupy consistency.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Spoon the jam into clean jars or containers, including some of the syrupy liquid in each.
Notes
- This jam stores well in the refrigerator for several weeks.
- Use sterilized jars for long-term storage.
- Adjust the sweetness by varying the brown sugar amount.
